Amnesty International stated that at least 30 people in Iran are at risk of receiving death sentences over their alleged involvement in the recent large-scale protests, noting that courts have already issued death sentences in eight cases.

The organization added that 22 additional cases remain under judicial review, including two minors. Iranian judicial authorities have not issued any official confirmation regarding these sentences.

Last week, Mizan News Agency, affiliated with Iran’s judiciary, reported that three men are on trial and could face the death penalty after being accused of participating in riots.

Amnesty International accused Iranian authorities of using the death penalty as a tool to suppress dissent. Diana Eltahawy, Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the organization, said the authorities “demonstrate a blatant disregard for the right to life and fair trial guarantees by threatening swift executions following expedited proceedings,” adding that such measures are intended to “instill fear and crush the will of those demanding change.”

The warning comes amid widespread protests across Iran over deteriorating economic conditions, which have been met with a violent security response. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), more than 7,000 people have been killed, while the government has announced an official death toll of 3,117.

Internationally, the United States has imposed new sanctions on senior Iranian officials over the crackdown on protesters, while the European Union has approved sanctions against 15 officials and six Iranian entities in connection with the events.
