The Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, marked International Mother Language Day, affirming the importance of language in safeguarding the cultural and national identity of peoples.

He noted that the Kurdish people had faced major challenges in the past, as the Kurdish language was banned during the rule of the Baath Party, which constituted an obstacle to freedom of expression and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Abdi explained that one of the most prominent achievements of the Rojava Revolution was what he described as the “language revolution,” which enabled the components of the region to speak their mother tongues freely—whether Kurdish or other languages spoken in North and East Syria. He underscored the role of cultural and educational institutions within the Autonomous Administration in consolidating this approach.

He also extended his greetings to those working in the field of language within the institutions of the Autonomous Administration, considering Decree No. 13 and the recognition of Kurdish as a national language as an important step in preserving linguistic and cultural identity. He described these measures as a culmination of the progress achieved in Rojava over recent years.
