Demonstrations continue in the Syrian governorate of As-Suwayda; The demonstrators, who initially came out to condemn the Damascus government's economic policy, are calling for "the topple of the regime."

Response to demonstrations is increasing

Journalist and director of the Uprising Media Center in As-Suwayda, Murhaf Al-Shaer, spoke to ANHA's agency about these demonstrations, saying: “The people’s demands are clear; they are first represented by the departure of power, the implementation of International Resolution 2,254, and the emphasis on a state of citizenship and democracy, especially in light of marginalization, lack of political participation, and alienation within the homeland. And from the inability to take any decision related to the fate and rights of peoples.”

Al-Shaer pointed out that “the response to the demonstrations is at the best levels. The state of the revolution and popular uprising continues to increase further after it has proven its civilisation, peacefulness and success at the organizational level. Every day we witness demonstrations by new villages, political forces and even civil organizations and a social and family movement that confirms the statement of His Eminence Sheikh Hikmat Al-Hijri.” The spiritual head of the Druze Unitarian Muslim sect, who explicitly pointed out the validity of the people’s demands and the necessity of change. There are different groups, young men, women, and children, who express their desire to join and participate continuously until their demands are achieved.”

“The uprising aims to achieve change and create a democratic national climate.”

Regarding the expected path of developments, Al-Shaer explained that “the uprising’s current focus is on achieving change and creating a democratic national climate that guarantees the freedom of peoples and rids them of the ruling oligarchy that has tyrannized over the necks of its people and squandered the country’s national capabilities and sold them to foreigners.”

He said: “The people of Suwayda are counting on their Syrian brothers in all governorates and regions to stand with Syrian dignity and rise up for the future of their children and build a future Syria based on justice, freedom and social justice. We note the stances of all displaced Syrians in the countries of the world because they restored the hope of the revolution and we see it as the gateway to hope for salvation for all Syrians.” This indicates the expansion of the demonstrations and participation throughout Syria."

 “The uprising produced organizational committees.”

Regarding the necessity of organizing the movement better, the journalist from Suwayda said: “In practice, Suwayda has a value and moral system, and there is a national action elite based on its customs that are governed by the traditions of a mature society, and it may witness a better state of organizing its movement. So far, the popular uprising has produced organizing committees whose mission is to protect the demonstrations.” and service institutions. The governorate also recorded a decline in incidents of kidnapping and security-backed gangs since the start of the movement, and the civil committees took over the protection of the interests of the people of Suwayda.”

He pointed out that "it is possible to move toward forming expanded committees in consultation between the political, civil, and civil forces and the supreme authority of the Sheikhdom of Mind, by finding a common formula and vision of a solution that serves all Syrians in general and the people of Suwayda in particular, in light of the potential threats and dangers and the psychological warfare practiced by the authority regarding the threat of ISIS or finding discord and sowing discord."

Many factors

The journalist Al-Shaer concluded his speech by saying: “The economic conditions are one of the causes of the problem, but there are other factors such as political marginalization, the displacement of young people, the security grip, the destruction of the future of young people, arrests, and the violent practices that the authorities have followed against the Syrians, and in general, the monopolization of decision-making and the centralization of power are a cause that cannot be denied. The solutions currently offered are peaceful change.” To gain power and achieve the aspirations of the Syrians for a civil, democratic state that guarantees the rights of peoples, and to produce a national constitution that meets everyone’s aspirations. The form of government may not be an end in itself, but rather a human right and a decent living without violating its will.”
