Hikmat Habib: failure of Constitutional Committee was expected

The so-called Constitutional Committee continues to fail for the second day to hold its second round of meetings due to the disagreements of the participants on their agendas.

In response, Vice President of the Syrian Democratic Council Hikmat Habib spoke to our agency.

Habib started by saying: "The so-called Constitutional Committee was scheduled to hold the second round of its meetings; however, because of the differences that emerged between the participants, it is no wonder that did not happen as we expected it, because this committee was originally formed by external sponsors which are Russia, Turkey and Iran."

Adding to the reason for this failure he said, "the mentioned bodies want to achieve their interests, which are far from the real representation of the Syrian people, and these differences are proof that this committee will not reach anything in the end."

'The basis is to hold a national conference for all Syrians to make a committee to write the constitution'

"We at the Syrian Democratic Council have always said that we are in favor of a political solution in Syria, and working to write a constitution for the whole country, but not in this way, it was supposed to hold a national conference for all Syrians and emerge from a general assembly working to establish a constitutional committee. The constitution is written by the Syrians, away from foreign interference and dictates."

Al-Habib criticized the trade in these meetings at the expense of the Syrian blood. On the ground most notably the Syrian Democratic Council and the Autonomous Administration in northern and eastern Syria."

Hikmat Habib also criticized the work of the office of the UN envoy to Syria, saying: "The UN envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen in his recent statements about the meetings of the Constitutional Committee before the Security Council, focused on people and spoke about them and did not offer anything new, and expressed concern about the vulnerability of civilians in Idlib, and he expressed his concerns over civilians’ shelling, but did not address the bombardment of civilians in northern and eastern Syria by Turkish aggression, these signals worry our peoples of the double standards of UN organizations.

'International organizations look at the Syrian crisis partially'

He added in the same context that "international organizations are looking at part of the Syrian crisis, and these partial solutions will not lead to the solution of the Syrian crisis, especially with regard to the constitution, it is true that resolution 2254 includes in one of the bases of the Constitutional Committee, but as mentioned earlier how to draft or rewrite under these circumstances, there are occupied and tense areas, and there is a Syrian division around this committee in this light, we do not see success looming for this committee. "

Al-Habib stressed the need for the international community to work first and foremost to stop the Turkish occupation and eliminate terrorism, which continues to target the whole of Syria.

"We hope that in the next stage, the work of the United Nations and the Office of the UN Envoy to Syria will be reconsidered, because in fact it is now implementing the views of certain countries as today in the Constitutional Committee, where Russia, Turkey and Iran are interfering in their work. Moreover, the issues of the occupied cities and escalating violence in Syria must be discussed before talking about the constitution. "
