Iraqi Council of Representatives fails to hold extraordinary session

The Council of Representatives, after the resumption of the extraordinary meeting headed by Salim al-Jubouri, the head of the Council of Representatives, ended last Sunday the discussion of the fourth proposed amendment to the law of the elections of the Council of Representatives No. 45 for 2013.

The session that was held on Saturday came in the light of the opposition of the Iraqi political blocs to the Parliament's attempt to introduce amendments to the elections’ law.

Iraq entered a new political crisis after the parliamentary elections which took place on 12 May in the result of mutual accusations spread among the political blocs of fraud.

The Federal Supreme Court, the highest judicial authority in Iraq decided on June 21 to manually recount the votes in the legislative elections; thus, a decision of the Iraqi Parliament would be approved.

The elections witnessed a record boycott with Iraqis’ ignoring the political elite which has been under the suspicions of corruption and ruling the country since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003.
