The Media Center of the Women's Protection Units published a written statement on its official website today regarding the Turkish attack that targeted the two journalists GulistanTara and Hîro Baha al-Din in the Sayyid Sadiq district of Sulaymaniyah on Friday (August 23).

The text of the statement is as follows:

"The attack of the fascist Turkish state on the journalists Gulistan Tara and Hîro Baha al-Din was aimed at concealing the plans of the Turkish state to occupy and seize Southern Kurdistan. The forces of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq in Southern Kurdistan are destroying the gains of the Kurdistan Freedom Movement, in cooperation with the Turkish state that sees its salvation in the genocide of the Kurdish people and the region, so the Turkish state continues to carry out such terrorist and inhumane attacks in the region.

Gulistan and Hîro Baha al-Din followed the truth of the attack and invasion of the Turkish state on Southern Kurdistan, which it is waging alongside those who practice slavery and traitorous forces in the country. Hîro Baha al-Din, with their struggle with their camera, pen and media, insisted on conveying these facts to the world. Therefore, on August 23 Hîro Baha al-Din were attacked by the Turkish state in Sulaymaniyah. Hîro Baha al-Din never stopped their struggle and sacrificed their lives in order to reveal the existing facts.

The history of Kurdish journalism is intertwined with the history of the Kurdish people's struggle. Today, the resistance of the Kurdish people is thanks to the work of journalists the fighters for the truth are clear, and history cannot deny this spirit and courage that insists on independence and freedom.

In front of the eyes of the whole world, the Turkish state is launching brutal attacks with armed aircraft. It is attacking politicians, academics, fighters and journalists in a manner that is outside the laws of war. During its attack on Rojava, the fascist state brutally killed the activist and journalist Dilovan Kever in 2019, while she was following the occupation attacks on the city of Girê Spî. As always, human rights institutions and agencies remain silent about the attacks launched by the Turkish state.

All authorities and officials in the Southern Kurdistan Region and Iraq should know very well that they are openly cooperating with the genocide that the Kurdish people are being subjected to in the lands of Southern Kurdistan. Targeting and killing journalists means silencing the voice of truth. The forces of Southern Kurdistan and Iraq must not allow the Turkish state to launch such inhumane attacks on their lands.

We express our condolences to the dear families of Hîro Baha al-Din. The struggle for free women's media to expose the truths of the fascist Turkish state, from Gürbet Ali Arsöz to Akı Yılmaz, Dilovan Kever, Gulistan and Hîro Baha al-Din's , has a history full of resistance, and for this reason we will never give up. As fighters and journalists who struggle for the freedom of our people and country, we fight to show resistance, and we promise to continue and raise the level of Gulistan and Hîro Baha al-Din's struggle."
