UN Mission continues meetings in Syria to discuss mechanisms for expanding support

The United Nations announced that the Deputy Special Envoy for Syria and Acting Head of Mission, Claudio Cordone, is currently visiting Damascus to hold meetings with government officials, political actors, and civil society organizations as part of efforts to protect children and expand the scope of UN support.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that the Deputy Special Envoy for Syria and Acting Head of Mission, Claudio Cordone, is currently in Damascus, according to the UN website.

Dujarric added during the daily press briefing that Cordone is holding meetings with Syrian government officials, political actors, UN entities, diplomatic partners, and members of civil society, including women’s organizations.

The UN spokesperson also stated in remarks today in New York that Vanessa Fraser, the UN Secretary-General’s Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, concluded a three-day visit to Syria on Thursday, during which she met with senior government officials, civil society representatives, and other partners.

Dujarric explained that the visit focused on exploring new opportunities for cooperation with the Syrian government to strengthen child protection and expand UN support.

He said the UN official emphasized that unexploded ordnance and landmines continue to pose a major challenge, urging donors to support both UN efforts and Syria’s efforts to address this critical issue.
