Study reveals that over 75,000 Palestinians killed in 15 months in Gaza

The study indicates that more than 75,000 Palestinians were killed during the first 15 months of the conflict between Hamas and Israel in Gaza, with women, children, and the elderly heavily affected. The toll exceeds earlier official figures.

According to the peer-reviewed study, published on Wednesday, women, children, and older people accounted for approximately 56.2 percent of the victims, a proportion that closely aligns with official reports from Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

The authors state that this represents the first independent population-based mortality survey conducted in the Gaza Strip. The survey covered 2,000 Palestinian households over a seven-day period beginning on December 30, 2024.

The researchers wrote: “Taken together, the evidence suggests that by January 5, 2025, between three and four percent of Gaza’s population had been killed as a result of violence, with a substantial number of additional deaths not directly caused by violence but indirectly linked to the conflict.”

The authors noted that most field researchers, the majority of whom were women, conducted face-to-face interviews with Palestinian families and applied statistical weighting to reflect Gaza’s population distribution. They reported a 95 percent confidence level in their estimates of violence-related deaths. The study also documented approximately 16,000 non-violent deaths during the same period, attributed to illness or other indirect consequences of the war.
