Turkey to transfer Kurdish detainee Lamia Asu to Syrian Transitional Government after 32 years

Turkish authorities are preparing to hand over Kurdish detainee Lamia Asu from the occupied city of Afrin to the Syrian Transitional Government after more than three decades in prison. She was transferred today to a detention center in preparation for the handover.

After more than 30 years behind bars, Turkish authorities transferred Kurdish detainee Lamia Asu to a detention center as a prelude to deporting her and handing her over to the Syrian Transitional Government authorities.

Lamia Asu hails from Afrin, currently occupied by Turkey, and was arrested in 1992 in the city of Siirt in Northern Kurdistan.

Lamia Asu, who spent 32 years in Şakran Women's Prison, faced multiple delays in her release. Her freedom was postponed once for 7 months and 15 days, and twice for 6 months each time, allegedly due to "opposition by officials," according to Mezopotamya Agency.

On October 6, it was officially decided to release her, after which she was immediately transferred to a detention center in Izmir as a preliminary step for deportation to Syria and handover to the Transitional Government.
