WFP sends 13 truckloads of flour to Sweida

Twelve trucks loaded with flour arrived in Sweida, provided by the World Food Programme, amid the ongoing siege imposed on the region by the Transitional Government forces, and the government’s refusal to release the area’s allocated share of flour.

Thirteen trucks from the World Food Programme (WFP) arrived today in the city of Sweida via the Damascus–Sweida route, carrying 200 tons of flour.

The flour was distributed evenly among local bakeries, following several days of bread shortages in the city and its surrounding countryside. Most bakeries had ceased operations due to a lack of flour and restrictions imposed by the Transitional Government forces preventing its entry.

Residents of Sweida and its countryside continue to endure extremely difficult living conditions, with essential services absent, as the Transitional Government maintains its blockade of the area, imposed since July.

Local markets are experiencing severe shortages in various food and medical supplies, alongside sharp price increases, particularly for bread and fuel. These conditions have heavily impacted low-income families, who face significant difficulties meeting their basic needs, compounded by the suspension of salaries and wages by the Transitional Government.

The amount of flour delivered is insufficient for sustained needs; Sweida and its countryside require approximately 120 tons of flour daily to maintain bread production.
