Trump to hold crisis meeting on Iran today

US President Donald Trump is chairing a crisis meeting today on Iran, according to US media, as negotiations for a ceasefire and the resumption of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz falter.

The US president is meeting with his national security and foreign policy team, according to Barak Ravid, a journalist with the US news site Axios.

He added via Axios that "the meeting will address the negotiations with Iran and the possible options for the next phases of the conflict."

For its part, ABC News quoted two US officials "involved in the preparations" as saying that "the Trump administration is showing increasing confidence in the impact of its naval blockade on Iranian ports, (compared to) growing skepticism about the ability of talks with the current Iranian negotiators to achieve the desired results."

Axios reported that Iran has presented the United States with a new proposal aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war, with negotiations on the nuclear issue to follow at a later date.

ABC News, citing one of its sources, confirmed that the conditions put forward by Tehran appear to be "far below the red lines set by the administration."
