the Syrian Democratic Council issued a written statement to public opinion, on the occasion of the eighth anniversary of its founding, which stated:

“On December 9, 2015, the forces that support dialogue, democracy, and national solutions, who are jealous of the unity and safety of the nation, and who are pained by the continuing tragedy and dispersion of the Syrian people and the dangers that threaten the future of their children, gathered in the city of Derik, in the far north-east of the country, to come up with a vision and strategy united by joint action, which culminated in the establishment of The Syrian Democratic Council, known as SDC.

The statement added, "Today, eight years after the founding of the SDC and thirteen years of the crisis, and despite the major changes that Syria and the region in general have witnessed, the Syrian Democratic Forces have curbed the expansion of the most powerful terrorist organization, liberated the cities and towns of the north and northeast of the country, and built civilian structures that manage... On the other hand, parts of northern Syria are exposed to the Turkish occupation and the control of factions that have nothing in common except crime and abuse of the Syrians, while the rest of the Syrian governorates are suffering under the weight of a tyrannical central rule, to which the Syrians are subject and who only have a narrative of imaginary victory.”

It continued, "We also have not witnessed any agreement to resolve the crisis by the international powers concerned with the Syrian file, and the Syrians are fighting among themselves and turning Syria into an arena for settling scores, proxy wars, and projects that cross geography and are alien to the Syrian identity."

The statement affirmed, "In the midst of these facts, the Syrian Democratic Council, with the cooperation of partners, friends, and those jealous of Syria's unity and social fabric, has become the national umbrella for the Syrian democratic forces and movements that believe in the Syrian solution through dialogue and negotiation."

The statement called on "all Syrians to work towards crystallizing a democratic national project whose nucleus is a unified Syria in land and people and whose unified national identity is in accordance with a modern constitution and decentralized governance with the agreement of all Syrians."
