Russia has warned that a war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran could trigger a nuclear arms race in the region, pushing Tehran and some Arab countries to seek nuclear weapons, which could threaten to push the nuclear proliferation issue out of control.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the logical outcome would be the emergence of “forces within Iran pushing toward what the Americans seek to prevent: the possession of a nuclear bomb, because America does not attack those who possess nuclear bombs.”

Lavrov explained during a press conference that Arab countries might also join the nuclear weapons race.

He added that the danger is now increasing that “the nuclear proliferation problem could get out of control.”

He continued: “The publicly declared noble goal of waging a war to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons may actually lead to completely opposite outcomes.
