Politicians, researchers discuss issue of displacement, ways to address it

Rhe member of the Executive Body of the Kurdistan National Congress, Akram Heso participated in the forum which held at the Muhammad Sheikho Center for Culture and Art in the city of Qamishlo, in addition to the co-chair of the Syriac Union Party, Sanharib Barsoum, the secretary of the Kurdish Democratic Unity Party in Syria (Yekiti), Muhyiddin Sheikh Ali, the member of the General Council of the Future Syria Party, Saleh Al-Zawbaa, the Women’s Authority in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of Jazera Canton, representatives from intellectual, educational and social institutions, civil society institutions, researchers and those interested in public affairs.

The attendees will shed light on the topics of “immigration and displacement in NE Syria, causes - repercussions - proposals - procedures.”

The forum will analyze the reasons behind the growth of migration and displacement to inform public opinion, the Autonomous Administration, and the intellectual, economic, and political elites of the danger of escalating migration and displacement to both existential, social, economic, and political security in NE Syria.

The forum will also provide the opportunity for male and female participants to present their research and proposals to limit migration and displacement and encourage return to the homeland, highlighting systematic displacement under the concept of immigration.

Before the launch of the forum, the Rojava Center for Strategic Studies distributed the results of an opinion poll of 2016 on migration and its motives, including those over the age of 18 from NE Syria, southern and northern Kurdistan, Turkey, and Europe.

After standing for a minute of silence, Kurdiyar Deri, on behalf of the organization organizing the dialogue forum, welcomed the participants.

He pointed out that "the continuation of the Syrian crisis and the failure to find a solution to end the conflict that left behind 12 years has burdened the citizens who are suffering as a result of the war.

Deri distinguished between migration and displacement: “In NE Syria, in particular, “displacement” appeared under the name “immigration.” Migration takes place by personal decision, intention, and desire, but displacement takes place by force, coercion, and planning. For this reason, we found it necessary to focus on this phenomenon in order to analyze, diagnose, and find solutions for it.

In turn, the administrator of the Martyrs' Families Council in NE Syrian region, Jawaher Othman praised the sacrifices of the martyrs to preserve the gains of the people's revolution in NE Syria.

She pointed to the policies of the dominant countries and said, "They encourage immigration with the aim of facilitating the implementation of their colonial and occupation projects in our regions," and stressed the need to confront and repel them.

The forum's activities will continue with a cinematic showing on immigration and displacement in NE Syria.

The forum continues with the community session, which is moderated by the member of the Executive Body of the Kurdistan National Congress, Akram Hesso, followed by two dialogue sessions. The first is migration and displacement, its causes and effects on NE Syria, and is moderated by the human rights activist and political activist, Dr. Abeer Hassaf, and the second is solutions, proposals, and measures to reduce migration and contribute to Reverse migration is moderated by the member of the Syriac Studies Office and civil activist, Malek Asmar. Each session includes three topics. After completing the sessions, the participants will issue a final statement.
