Perpetrators in committing horrible in Sheikh Maqsoud are still at large

The criminals and perpetrators of the Turkish occupation army's mercenaries involved in the bombing of the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood with prohibited chemical weapons are still at large in the areas occupied by the Turkish occupation army, with the absence of international accountability and ambivalence regarding humanitarian issues.

The Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in the city of Aleppo witnessed many battles and attacks targeting its residents. The most ferocious of these attacks began on February 16, 2016, and targeted unarmed civilians, adding another crime to the record of war crimes for which the criminals were not held accountable.

Among these crimes was the bombing of the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood with toxic materials at least three times, during which dozens suffered from suffocation and some of them died.

Victory was attacked with chemical weapons

In 2016, the Syrian Democratic Forces achieved victory over the mercenary groups and defeated them from the strategic town of Arfad (Tal Rifaat) in the northern countryside of Aleppo, which contributed to the Turkish occupation army directing its mercenaries to attack the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood on February 16, 2016, in order to hide its losses.

The mercenaries of the Turkish occupation army chose March 8, International Women’s Day, to begin bombing Sheikh Maqsoud with chemical weapons. On April 7, 2016, the neighborhood was bombed with chemical weapons for the second time, and the third time was on April 8 of the same year.

The Army of Islam mercenaries then issued a statement in which they admitted to using chemical materials in the bombing of the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, and justified their bombing as an individual act by one of their field commanders. Some observers suggested that the "Turkmen Front" mercenaries were the ones who used the chemical materials to bomb the neighborhood, after the Turkish occupation state supplied them with them through its border crossings with Syria.

A video clip was also circulated in April 2016 in the Ain al-Tal area of Aleppo, showing members of the Turkmen Front preparing missiles to bomb the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, at the same time 6 civilians were injured by poisoning and suffocation.

In the video clip, which included Janissary music, the missiles were written in Turkish: “In retaliation for the martyrs of Istanbul,” which confirms the allegations related to their affiliation with the Turkish occupation state.

Civilians paid the price

The co-chair of the General Council of the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods, Walat Mamo, who was a member of the medical staff during the bombing of the neighborhood with chemical weapons, confirmed the martyrdom of many civilians, including children and women, as a result of the indiscriminate bombing and toxic gases emitted from those shells.

Regarding the description of the cases that brought them to the hospital at that time, Walat Mamo explained: “There were many symptoms among the injured, but the most prominent of them was the occurrence of convulsions and an increase in body temperature above normal, accompanied by involuntary shivering and redness of the eyes, leading to complete suffocation of the victim.”

Mamo noted that the medical staff at that time was providing quick first aid by pumping oxygen into the lungs of the injured, primarily to help them breathe and relieve the apparent symptoms.

As for one of the critical cases that came to the hospital as a result of the chemical bombing, Maamou explained: “It was a minor girl whose condition worsened to the point of mental disorder and insanity as a result of the shock and gases to which she was exposed.”

Statistics documented internationally

According to the official statistics of the General Council, the total number of casualties in 2015 was 150 civilians losing their lives in attacks by Syrian Coalition mercenaries, including 40 children and 47 women, and 970 others wounded with varying injuries, in addition to the destruction of 2,600 homes and shops and causing damage to infrastructure.

In 2016, the number of human losses reached 200 civilians who lost their lives, and 600 others were injured as a result of continued attacks on the neighborhood by mercenaries affiliated with the Turkish occupation army.

Crimes documented by international organizations such as Amnesty International through reports based on the testimonies of those affected and satellite images.

The perpetrators and their supporters must be brought to justice

Walat Mamo stressed that the attacks using chemical weapons 8 years ago on the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood remind them of the painful scenes left by the Halabja massacre, and that the perpetrators of the two crimes are two sides of the same coin, representing fascists and democracy warriors.

Mamo described the crime as an attempt at "genocide," and despite this, the criminal perpetrators are still running around and having fun under the flags of the Turkish occupation army in the occupied areas, especially in Afrin.

Welat called on all concerned parties and human rights organizations to work to hold the Turkish occupation army and its mercenaries accountable for the crimes committed and repeated against the Syrians.
