Omani proposal to manage Strait of Hormuz gains regional support

Gulf sources revealed to Reuters that the Sultanate of Oman has presented a proposal to Iran to establish a joint regional mechanism for managing the Strait of Hormuz—including voluntary fees—in an effort to de-escalate tensions and ensure the security of navigation in one of the world's most vital maritime corridors.

A Gulf source told Reuters today that the Omani proposal enjoys regional support, though the source did not disclose which countries back it or provide further details regarding its implementation.

The proposal coincides with regional diplomatic activity concerning the security of the Strait; Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed Strait security and regional developments in separate phone calls on Monday evening with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan and the Omani Foreign Minister.

A statement posted on Araghchi’s Telegram channel indicated that the talks covered the latest bilateral and regional developments, emphasizing the need to enhance cooperation and advance joint diplomatic efforts to establish stability in the region.

These contacts take place amidst escalating regional tensions regarding maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, coinciding with Saudi Arabia’s announcement that it had shot down drones launched toward its territory from Iraq—Iran-linked groups were accused of being behind it.
