More than 30 Syrian parties will discuss documents, proposals to resolve Syrian issue

As part of the efforts to unify the ranks and efforts of democrats and strive to build a better future for Syria, preparations have begun for years to hold a conference for Syrian democratic forces and figures in the Belgian capital, Brussels. 

The conference will be held on October 25 and 26, with the attendance of many parties, including the Syrian Democratic Council, which was invited to participate in the conference and played a prominent role in organizing these meetings.

About thirty of the organizing forces and a significant number of independent figures will participate in the conference, according to what the Syrian oppositionist and member of the conference preparatory committee, Muwaffaq Nyrabiya, revealed to ANHA's agency.

According to, Muwaffaq Nyrabiya, the total number of participants may be around ninety people who will attend physically, and forty others will participate online. Invitations were sent to figures from inside, some of whom will attend physically while the majority will participate online due to obstacles.These obstacles are not limited to the position of Syrians inside with the regime, but also include some regional interventions in Syrian affairs in a violent manner.

Regarding the nature of the forces that were invited, he indicated that there are determinants that were formed jointly over three years, through four major consultative meetings in Stockholm, in addition to a roundtable, workshops and retreats. These determinants revolve around a general agreement on the unified Syrian identity and the principle of decentralization, in addition to issues related to secularism, religion, women, the constitution and the principle of consensus. No extra details or strict conditions were set, but rather this was done through dialogue, interaction and interest, as "our interest lies in the unity of Syria and achieving its independence."

Muwaffaq Nyrabiya spoke about this conference, saying: "It is a step towards organizing and unifying democratic energies in Syria, whether forces or individuals. This is a step open with humility to everyone who belongs to this movement, which we know very well is the largest in Syria, the country that is characterized by its moderation and civility and the closest to secularism, far from extremism and backward reactionary thought. This large segment of society has been excluded, marginalized and isolated from the political context, where the country is in turmoil and its capabilities are being manipulated."

Numerous documents and proposals

Muwaffaq Nyrabiya spoke about the conference agenda, revealing that "it will discuss several intensive documents that address the basic problems and open windows for practical and modern solutions: the issue of identity, decentralization, separation of religion from the state, women's liberation and national problems in the Syrian structure, and propose constitutional principles for agreement among Syrians and to be among the foundations of the future Syria."

In this context, he added that the conference: "will also discuss the paths of the political process and the difficulties and obstacles it faces, with the aim of reaching a set of proposals that, after discussing them with other Syrian parties, could constitute a door towards settling the Syrian issue away from tyranny, oppression and discrimination."

The door is open to all

Regarding the desired results of this conference, the Syrian opposition indicated that they hope that the conference will result in "opening a wider window for the Syrians to contribute to shaping their future and getting them out of the bottleneck. We do not want to be a leadership or a center, and we do not want to be distinguished by anything. We want the unity of Syrian democrats, organizing their ranks and sharpening their capabilities to be part of Syria's path towards democracy. Therefore, we made the conference a democratic path for Syria, not a structure closed to us.

"He added: "We hope that no one will see our conference as a closed door or a private shop, but rather as an encouraging step to achieve what we say we are about to achieve. It is an open, flexible step that is thirsty for dialogue and discussion. The way we worked was a lesson that developed from one meeting to another, and a number that is equal to many times those who will participate in the conference interacted with us on the way, and we have not and will not be cut off from them, as they are part of our path, our dynamism and our upcoming movement. We hope that the conference will be a period for collecting the results and a practical discussion of our upcoming program. In the context of our previous work, we held several round tables that were productive and practical, and we will try to develop this method as well, between us and others."

Efforts for a Syrian-led solution leading to a national conference

Muwaffaq Nyrabiya noted that: "There is a fundamental point that has been repeated in what has been said and decided about the Syrian issue, which is that this issue should be led by Syria. Despite a lot that has happened in the course of this issue, the real leadership must be for the Syrians themselves. The regime and the official opposition have played a major role in this deficiency, in addition to the intervention of external forces that have filled the void most of the time."

Muwaffaq Nyrabiya spoke about their upcoming work plan, and explained, "We want to raise the level of representation of the Syrians and their ability to solve and connect, efficiently and effectively. We can improve that, first by raising the level of unification and organization of Syrian democrats, then we head towards a Syrian national conference that we have known from the beginning is the path to a solution, settlement and consensus."

The Syrian oppositionist concluded his speech by saying: "We are not an alternative to anyone and we do not want that. On the contrary, we want all parties to dialogue and interact until we find a way out of the suffocating bottleneck."
