Under the slogan “Kurdish Women’s Leadership Ensures Kurdish National Unity,” the first Kurdish Women’s Conference in Rojava was held at Azadi Park in Qamishlo, Jazira Canton. The event gathered women from North and East Syria, Damascus, and Aleppo, alongside independent figures, political parties, and fighters from the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ).
Participants spoke to ANHA agency about the conference’s objectives and the significance of Kurdish women’s unity.
“Women Have Developed Politically, Militarily, and Organizationally”
Rania Hussein expressed her joy at seeing all Kurdish women coming together for the first time in such a conference. She emphasized that the participants had one shared goal: securing their rights in Syria’s future and establishing an independent women’s organization. She highlighted the progress women have made in political, organizational, and military spheres.
Sherin Rashid described the conference as “a source of joy” and stressed the necessity of unity among women, stating, “Through the unity of women, the unity of peoples is built.” She added that this conference is “a milestone for all women worldwide in their struggle for existence, aiming to build a democratic society and a free life.”
Activist Nalin Asaad underscored the importance of the conference in strengthening Kurdish women’s unity, especially in light of the new constitution, which she said had marginalized women across all aspects of life. “It was essential for us to come together with one voice. This conference was successful, and we now call for a similar one on a broader, Syrian-wide level,” she stated.
“This Conference Lays the Foundation for a Kurdish National Congress”
Kuli Jaafar, the member of the Coordinating Committee of the Yazidi Union of Syria, noted the challenges faced in organizing the event, emphasizing the extensive struggle that led to this moment. She described the conference as “a powerful message for Kurdish national unity” and asserted that it would serve as the groundwork for a broader Kurdish National Congress.
