Kurdish political parties should set aside disputes, adopt national unity

Amid recent developments in NE Syria, as well as Rojava, related to the unification of Kurdish political parties, women from Qamishlo expressed their perspectives in a discussion with ANHA agency.

Decades of Oppression Under Baathist Rule

Ibtisam Hussein noted that the Baath Party regime ruled Syria, particularly oppressing the Kurdish people, for over 50 years, as the Kurdish population endured relentless repression and was a constant target of policies aimed at eradicating their language and identity.

Hussein explained that during the past 13 years, the Rojava Revolution has faced numerous attacks from occupying forces but has shown remarkable resilience. She remarked that the recent developments, beginning on December 8, involving external interventions in Syria, have led to the downfall of the Syrian regime.

She added that the interim government now controlling Damascus did not emerge suddenly. “This government remains listed as a terrorist organization internationally. Its policies and legislation continue to neglect the rights of Kurdish, Armenian, Assyrian Syriac, and Druze communities in the region, leaving these groups to confront their reality directly,” she said.

Autonomous Administration: A Model of Diversity

Hussein described it as a project that reflects the identity and culture of the region’s diverse communities, ensuring their rights within a framework of cooperation and inclusivity.

Hussein highlighted that the Rojava Revolution, now in its 13th year, has entered a pivotal historical phase. She stated, “In these historic times, it is crucial to reach out to one another, set aside personal and tribal differences, and unite the Kurdish house to prevent becoming a tool in others’ hands.”

Quoting the Kurdish poet Ahmad Khani, she said, “As Kurds, we find ourselves at a critical juncture, and it is essential not to squander this historic opportunity.” She expressed regret that the Kurdish people have yet to seize this opportunity fully.

Hussein called on “all free-minded individuals who seek recognition for our history, language, identity, and culture—not only in Rojava but across the homeland—to come together and build unity.” She urged the people to support the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the People's Protection Units (YPG), and the Women's Protection Units (YPJ) to approach Damascus with a united voice.

Hussein also pointed to the call made by General Commander of the SDF, Mazloum Abdi, urging unity among Kurdish political parties. She stressed the necessity of building unity to create a collective force capable of securing a favorable legal and political status.

Ciyal Mohammed emphasized that the Kurdish people, endowed with strong willpower, have long been demanding their legitimate rights. She highlighted the Baathist regime’s denial of Kurdish existence and affirmed that the Kurdish struggle today has cemented their identity and presence.

Adopting Abdullah Ocalan's vision of a democratic nation, she explained, has become the foundation for achieving freedom. “It is vital for Kurds, Arabs, Assyrian Syriacs, and all other components to unite in protecting this homeland,” she added.

Mohammed stressed the importance of unity among Kurdish political parties, stating that the Kurdish people have sacrificed greatly for their freedom. She called on political parties to join forces, adding that such unity is imperative for equality and national solidarity.

 Kelnaz Ahmed Asaad further stressed the need for Kurdish political parties to set aside their differences. She emphasized the necessity of building Kurdish national unity to achieve shared objectives.

Asaad highlighted the significant strength that the Kurdish people have gained on the ground after years of struggle. She pointed to their victory over forces like ISIS as evidence of their capability and determination, noting the great sacrifices made in the process.

She concluded by underscoring the critical importance of unity, stating, “Every conscientious Kurd must advocate for our unity. Our political parties must come together today. This is a golden opportunity, and if we fail to seize it, it may not arise again for hundreds of years.”
