Kurdish community in Europe pays tribute to martyrs Nûreddin Sofi, his comrades

On Sunday, August 17, 2025, the Kurdish communities in Vienna, Lebanon, and Belgium organized a series of events to honor the memory of the martyrs — Commander Nûreddin Sofi, Kocero Urfa, and Bakhtiar Kabar — in recognition of their sacrifices and their role in defending freedom, human values, and the Kurdish liberation struggle.

In the Austrian capital Vienna, Kurdish intellectuals — including writers, artists, and academics residing in Austria — held a memorial evening for Martyr Nûreddin Sofi. Speeches highlighted milestones of his life and struggle in defense of the freedom and rights of the Kurdish people.

Participants emphasized that Nûreddin Sofi embodied dedication and sacrifice, remaining committed to the values of justice and equality until his martyrdom. The evening also featured poetry recitations, intellectual interventions, and a documentary photo exhibition underscoring the importance of continuing his path in defense of human values and the cause of freedom.

In Lebanon, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and Kongra Star organized a mourning ceremony for the three martyrs on August 17, 2025, attended by hundreds of members of the Kurdish community, families of the martyrs, and friends of the Kurdish people, including Arabs, Armenians, and Syriacs.

The event began with a moment of silence in tribute to the martyrs, accompanied by the Kurdish national anthem.

 Attendees also remembered the sacrifices of all martyrs, stressing the necessity of building a democratic society grounded in the philosophy of the democratic nation, tolerance, and coexistence.

In Belgium, the Kurdish community organized a commemoration ceremony for the three martyrs in the town of Aarschot, Leuven, with the participation of the martyrs’ families and the Nav-Bel Democratic Community Center.

The program began with tributes to the martyrs, followed by speeches from the heads of participating organizations who affirmed their commitment to carrying forward the martyrs’ legacy.

 Representatives of the martyrs’ families, the PYD, the Free Women’s Movement, and PJAK delivered remarks praising the contributions of Nûreddin Sofi and his comrades to the freedom movement, their support for the cause of women’s liberation, and their efforts toward building a democratic society.
