Jazira Canton comes alive with Nowruz celebrations
Residents of cities in Jazera Canton, in the North and East Syria region, celebrated Nowruz 2025 with great enthusiasm and a strong spirit of resistance and struggle.

Nowruz celebrations continue across the region, marked by the lighting of the Nowruz flame and the organization of folkloric performances and traditional dances in preparation for this day, which symbolizes resistance and freedom for the people of the region.
Amuda
The school administration in the city of Amuda organized a celebration at Nizamuddin Primary School, attended by students, teachers, and local residents.
The celebration began with a moment of silence, followed by the lighting of the Newroz fire. The festivities then continued with music and traditional Dabke dancing.
Additionally, the Martyr Aqida Academy in Amuda opened an exhibition of handmade crafts at the academy building, featuring contributions from academy members and women from Jazera Canton.
The one-day exhibition showcased Kurdish clothing, traditional outfits, and beaded accessories, along with handmade heritage items such as models reflecting the region’s cultural traditions. The exhibition aimed to highlight women's skills and preserve the region’s heritage.
Qamishlo
The organizing committee for Nowruz celebrations in Qamishlo distributed invitation flyers on the city streets, encouraging participation in the Nowruz festivities.
Wearing traditional Kurdish outfits, the distributors handed out "arban" in front of the Mohammed Sheikho Center for Culture and Art.
Mothers of martyrs and members of the Nowruz celebration committee also distributed flyers to citizens and shop owners in the market, which included details about the location, date, and time of the celebration.
The Jazera Canton Internal Body organized a celebration in front of the Mohammed Sheikho Center for Culture and Art in Qamishlo, attended by city residents dressed in their traditional clothing.
The Nowruz fire was lit by Ilham Hassan Abdullah, the co-chair of the Jazera Canton Internal Body. The celebration continued with revolutionary songs and Dabke dancing.
Similarly, Rojava University held a celebration on campus, where students lit the Nowruz fire and danced the Dabke to the sounds of revolutionary songs.
Çil Agha
In the city of Çil Agha, the Martyr Nowjan School in the village of Dairona Aghi organized a celebration attended by school administrators from Çil Agha, teaching staff, students, and their families in traditional dress.
The event began with a moment of silence and the lighting of the Nowruz fire. Teacher Lava Youssef welcomed the attendees, congratulated them on the arrival of Nowruz, and expressed her hope that this year’s Nowruz would bring peace and freedom.
The celebration included theatrical performances by the students, depicting the resistance of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the People’s Protection Units (YPG), and the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), as well as the people of North and East Syria at the Tishrin Dam against Turkish occupation attacks.
A reenactment was also staged to honor the martyr Bavi Tayar. The celebration continued with the recitation of poems and revolutionary songs, while the attendees formed Dabke circles.
Hasaka
The Hasaka City Council in Jazera Canton distributed invitation flyers encouraging people to attend the official celebration, which will take place on March 21 at the western dam of the city, with the participation of residents from the cities of Al-Shaddadi and Tal Brak.
In a related event, the Teacher Training Institute in the city organized a celebration attended by hundreds of students and teachers at Ali Bakr School in the Kallasah neighborhood.
The celebration included a lecture on Nowruz and its historical and cultural significance, followed by Dabke dancing to the sounds of revolutionary songs.
