Kurdish should be official language at all levels of education

Speaking about the decision of the Syrian transitional government, resident Adel Shiro said, “As is known, we, as citizens, will never accept the transitional government’s decision in Damascus to teach only three Kurdish-language classes per week for our children.”

Shiro continued, emphasizing the importance of the mother tongue: “Since every society is defined by its language, we Kurds also have the right to learn and study in our language.”

Shiro concluded, “We are not against any language, but a person’s mother tongue remains essential because it protects their existence and identity.”

Shaimaa Mohammed, a third-grade student, said, “I am currently at my school, studying in my mother tongue. I am Kurdish, and my language is Kurdish.”

Amira Omar called for her children’s right to education, saying, “Our children have been studying in Kurdish for 14 years, and they have the right to study and receive their education in their mother tongue.”

Amira Omar added, “As a mother, I do not want my children to study in any language other than Kurdish.”

She concluded, “We are not against our children learning other languages, but they should first receive their education in their mother tongue.”
