The Israeli news website Ynet reported today, citing unnamed sources, that there has been significant progress in the talks for a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and a prisoner exchange.

The website quoted an official as saying that Israel and Hamas have shown flexibility regarding reaching an agreement, but both sides are concerned about the repercussions of the confrontation with Iran.

A non-Israeli source told the news site that the scope of the current talks on Gaza is much broader, saying, "The talks are primarily about ending the war, and the messages exchanged concern the future of Gaza, not just the first stage of returning eight to ten living hostages."

The war between Israel and Hamas erupted nearly 20 months ago, after Hamas-led militants stormed southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Israeli statistics indicate that the attack killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took 251 hostages, making it the bloodiest day in Israel's history.

Health authorities in the Gaza Strip say that the ongoing Israeli military campaign has killed approximately 55,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, flattened much of the Strip, displaced most of its population, and spread hunger and malnutrition.
