Syrians are living under extremely harsh economic and social conditions amid policies pursued by the Syrian Interim Government, some of which are accused of entrenching job discrimination, weak institutional expertise, and inequality in salaries. This has led to worsening poverty rates, rising family disintegration and social division, along with growing fear and declining trust in the capital, Damascus.

Sixty-year-old Saeed Ahmed Othman, who took part in the defense of Kobani against ISIS in 2014, continues to bake and distribute bread daily through the city’s bakery as a symbol of the resilience of Kobani’s residents and their determination to live despite all challenges. Observers believe that the recent agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and Damascus has raised Kurdish hopes for establishing a form of self-administration or expanded decentralization. There may also be a formula of understanding between agreement and conflict regarding the Iranian situation, while Washington seeks to counter Iranian influence in Iraq.
