The city of Qamishlo and all the cities and districts of NE Syria are witnessing a severe fuel shortage. Most stations are empty of fuel, while the other few stations are witnessing long queues of hundreds of cars.

This crisis emerged after the recent Turkish attacks, which increased in severity from January 12 to 16, targeting the region's infrastructure, especially the energy sector.

Sayed Sayed (35 years old), the owner of a small car says as he looks at the long queue at Jazera gas station in the city: “There is a fuel crisis and congestion. Since midnight, I have been standing in line to get some liters of gasoline so that I can work, and you also see about 500 cars in the same condition.”

Quantities of fuel after the attacks

The Fuel Directorate of the Autonomous Administration in Jazera Canton declared a “state of emergency” in the region on January 18, and revealed that all stations and oil wells had stopped production as a result of the Turkish bombing.

The portion of the Qamishlo region was 15 diesel tanks (the capacity of each one was 40 thousand liters) per day, which decreased after the recent attacks to only 6 tanks, as is the case for gasoline, its quantity decreased from 3 tanks to one tank. Only one, while no household gas canister reaches the area anymore, due to the Suwaydiya Electricity and Gas Station being targeted and completely out of service, according to the Fuel Directorate.

A few hundred meters away from the same queue, a taxi driver, Mahmoud Sabry Ali, describes the situation as “tragic”. He adds, “My work stopped four days ago due to the lack of fuel.” He wonders: “I have five children who must live. How will this happen?” .

The Democratic Autonomous Administration in Jazera Canton revealed, during a conference on January 17, a complete power outage in the cities and villages of Jazera Canton, and that all water stations, hospitals, medical centers, ovens, mills, service facilities and other energy sectors were out of service as a result of the recent Turkish attacks.
