Floods, damage, road disruptions due to weather conditions in Syria

Vast parts of Syria are facing harsh conditions due to heavy rainfall and snowfall, as floods and snow have disrupted roads and increased the suffering of residents, particularly in camps and rural areas with weak infrastructure.

Most regions of Syria are witnessing unstable weather conditions today, ranging from snowfall and rainfall of varying intensity from one area to another, along with fluctuating temperatures.

Recent heavy rainfall has caused widespread damage to plastic greenhouse projects in Syria, with the most affected being in the Safsafah area in the countryside of Tartus, resulting in significant losses for farmers. Additionally, the formation of torrents and partial rockfalls in the city of Al-Qadmous in the Tartus countryside has led to the temporary closure of some roads.

Camps in northern Syria, especially the Karm al-Zaytoun camp in the city of Azaz in the Aleppo countryside, are experiencing difficult humanitarian conditions due to the continued heavy rainfall.

The Aleppo–Gaziantep road is difficult to traverse due to snow accumulation, while efforts are underway to open the road from Manbij to Azaz and extract stranded vehicles. Meanwhile, the Banias–Tartus road is experiencing difficulty in passage due to flooding at certain points.

In a positive indicator, the Al-Abrash River in the Tartus countryside has returned to heavy flow after years of decline, promising a good agricultural season.

The weather today continues to be partly cloudy to rainy, with heavy precipitation accompanied by thunderstorms and occasionally hail in the coastal region, while the precipitation turns to snow on mountain elevations above 1400m and in the far reaches of the Jazira Canton.

As for temperatures, they are rising in the regions of North and East Syria, returning to around their averages, except for mountainous heights, which remain 5-8 degrees Celsius below their averages.

At night, the weather will be cold, with the possibility of frost formation in the northern regions and fog and ice in the mountainous heights.

The winds will be southeasterly in the Jazira Canton, and westerly to southwesterly in the remaining areas, moderate with gusts exceeding 70 km/h. Meanwhile, the sea will be rough with wave heights reaching moderate levels after midnight.
