Fawza Youssef: Attack on Sheikh Maqsoud and Al-Ashrafiyah is declaration of war

Fawza Youssef, the member of the Executive Committee of the Democratic Union Party, told Ronahi TV that the attack on these neighborhoods “is a declaration of genocidal war against the Kurdish community, which is one of the fundamental components of the Syrian state.”

She stressed that this attack is a severe strategic error, saying: “It will lead to greater division and fragmentation and will have irreversible consequences.” She added that such a decision continues the policy of eradicating the indigenous communities of Syria, with the Interim Government bearing full responsibility.

Youssef stated that they have repeatedly tried to resolve issues through dialogue and understanding, but the Interim Government consistently avoids this and seeks to impose surrender. She noted that military options only serve Syria’s enemies and those seeking to undermine its unity.

She called for adopting the language of peace as a basis, saying: “Democratic integration is the way forward.” She continued: “Policies of marginalization and exclusion have prevailed, and there is still no representation of communities in the Interim Government. Critical decisions in Syria are made without considering the country’s diversity.”

She emphasized that the Interim Government seeks to impose its terms through war and violence, which is unacceptable, noting that the March 10 and April 1 agreements affirm democratic integration, not coercion. She warned that attempts to intimidate them will fail, saying: “We have given thousands of martyrs to live under a democratic system that guarantees our existence and identity. Dialogue should prevail to avoid a war that everyone loses, because a government that attacks its people loses legitimacy first and foremost.”

Youssef highlighted that residents of Sheikh Maqsoud and Al-Ashrafiyah have played a leading role since the beginning of the revolution in opposing the Baath regime and all terrorist groups. They have always advocated peace and freedom, but when attacked, they resist and have historically triumphed in every battle. She said: “We call on our heroic people in Sheikh Maqsoud and Al-Ashrafiyah to stand with the Internal Security Forces and defend themselves, their existence, and their dignity.”

She emphasized that they are not advocates of war, but have the right to self-defense. She called on the Syrian people and communities to support the resistance of Sheikh Maqsoud and Al-Ashrafiyah and urged the international community and the United Nations to pressure the Interim Government to comply with the April 1 agreement and stop the attack.
