Displaced Women from Girê Spî: No safe return under occupation, presence of mercenaries

Displaced women from the city of Girê Spî/Tal Abyad stressed that a safe return to their homes cannot be achieved under the ongoing Turkish occupation and the presence of mercenaries. They called for the effective implementation of the provisions of the agreements stipulating the safe and dignified return of the displaced to their occupied areas.

The agreement signed between the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, and the president of the transitional government in Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, on March 10 of this year, represented a glimmer of hope for these displaced people, as it stipulated the provision of the necessary groundwork for a safe return to the occupied areas of Girê Spî, Serê Kaniyê, and Afrin.

However, the ongoing Turkish occupation and the presence of its mercenaries prevent the implementation of these provisions, given the absence of international guarantees to protect the returnees.

Adula Khalil, a displaced woman living in the Girê Spî displacement camp, said, "We have been living in the camp for six years, caught between the harshness of summer and the cold of winter, and in harsh living conditions.

We saw the recent agreements as a glimmer of hope, but they remained ink on paper. We cannot return with the occupation and its mercenaries present." She continued, "What happened in Afrin is the best example, where returnees were subjected to serious violations, including kidnapping, extortion, and harassment, despite the promises and agreements."

For her part, Khawla al-Ibrahim said, "The agreements have not been implemented on the ground, and the presence of mercenaries makes returning a major risk. We demand the actual implementation of the agreements and the withdrawal of the occupier from our land, as a basic condition for ensuring our safe return."

The two displaced women, along with thousands of camp residents, called on the international community and relevant parties to take concrete steps to ensure a safe and dignified return to their homes, free from ongoing threats and violations. The Girê Spî IDP camp, established by the Democratic Autonomous Administration on November 22, 2019, near the village of Tal al-Saman, houses approximately 7,000 displaced men and women from the city of Girê Spî/Tal Abyad and its countryside. They were forcibly displaced as a result of the Turkish attack on the area on October 9 of the same year, which led to the displacement of more than 100,000 people.

The camp's residents are suffering from difficult living and economic conditions due to the loss of their livelihoods. They have continued to resist the harsh living conditions for nearly six years, hoping to return to their homes.
