DAA: New irrigation project serves 220,000 dunams, 270,000 people

The Democratic Autonomous Administration (DAA) in Deir ez-Zor Canton is about to accomplish an irrigation project that will serve 220,000 dunams of agricultural land, and provide water to 270,000 people through the rehabilitation of the Euphrates River traction canal.

The Agriculture and Irrigation Body of the DAA in Deir ez-Zor Canton announced the launch of a project to rehabilitate the 50-km-long Khabur irrigation canal by removing the damaged cement blocks, which numbered 264 along a length of 43 km within the canal.

The strategic project, which relies on pumping water into the canal through three water pumping stations serves the irrigation of agricultural areas estimated at 220 thousand dunams.

" The project provides drinking water to 270,000 people, through five main drinking water stations, which are “Hariza water station, Al-Harijiya water station, and two Khamiyyat Al-Sour and Markada water stations” the head of the irrigation office in Deir ez-Zor, Abdel Hamid al-Jallad said.

 Al-Jallad added," The project is an important step to enhancing agriculture and environmental sustainability in Deir ez-Zor. This renovation will stimulate agricultural growth in the region and improve the living conditions of citizens who depend on water.”

The project will put into service within the next few weeks, according to the Co-Chair of the Executive Council of the Democratic Autonomous Administration in Deir ez-Zor Canton, Muhammad al-Dakhil, during the last tour by the joint presidency of the Council and the Agriculture and Irrigation Body in the Canton.
