Baghdad rejects NYT claim of U.S.-Iran mediation

The Iraqi Prime Minister's Media Office has denied the accuracy of a report published by The New York Times claiming that Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi conveyed a U.S. ceasefire proposal to Iran, describing the report as "false."

The Media Office of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi denied the claims made in a New York Times report regarding mediation between Iran and the United States.

In a statement, the office said the allegations contained in the report were "entirely false" and had no basis in reality.

It also urged all media outlets to verify information, rely on official sources, and refrain from publishing unverified reports or claims attributed to anonymous sources.

Earlier, The New York Times reported that Iran had rejected a U.S. ceasefire proposal delivered to Tehran by Al-Zaidi, citing unnamed Iranian and Iraqi officials.

According to the newspaper, Tehran appears uninterested in a temporary agreement that leaves the issue of control over the Strait of Hormuz unresolved. The White House had not immediately commented on the report.

Prime Minister Al-Zaidi visited Tehran on Thursday, following his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House last week.
