At least 300 Killed in political violence in Bangladesh

The Bangladeshi human rights group Odhikar reported that political unrest in the country has claimed around 300 lives since the demonstrations that toppled Hasina in the summer of 2024.

In a new report, the organization stated that between August 2024 and September 2025, at least 281 people were killed, including 40 victims of extrajudicial executions and 153 who died as a result of lynchings and violent assaults.

Sheikh Hasina fled to India following mass student-led protests that were violently suppressed by police, leaving hundreds dead.
According to United Nations estimates, the death toll from those events reached about 1,400 people, most of them civilians.

During her tenure, Hasina was accused of human rights violations and of targeting political opponents. The public prosecutor in her trial in absentia is reportedly seeking the death penalty for her over those alleged abuses.

Since Hasina’s ouster, a transitional government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus has been administering the country until parliamentary elections scheduled for February next year.
