ANHA's agency monitored the opinions of people forcibly displaced from occupied Afrin, about the reality of their daily lives in light of the ongoing Turkish attacks on Afrin and al-Shahba canton, as well as the siege imposed by Damascus government forces.

After Turkey occupied Afrin on March 18, 2018, more than 300,000 people were displaced and lived in the “Sardum, Barkhadan, Afrin, al-Awda and al-Shahba” camps that were established in Afrin and al-Shahba canton.

Among these camps is the al-Shahba camp, which was established by the Autonomous Administration of Afrin in 2016, in order to shelter the displaced from al-Shahba and Aleppo, so that the displaced people of Afrin would later live there as well.

“They bomb the camp’s surroundings daily.”

Afrinian woman, Leyla Mohammad, who lives in al-Shahba camp, pointed out to ANHA's agency the difficulties they face and the attacks they are exposed to even while in the camp, saying: “We went to al-Shahba camp after the occupation of Afrin, and the camp is located near the border strip, and the Turkish occupation state bombs us on daily basis, fired shells around the camp, which frightens our children. The attacks of the Turkish state did not stop throughout the winter, and international humanitarian organizations must follow the situation in the camps. They must take these attacks and these difficulties into consideration. We are withstanding all these difficulties and suffering, just for the sake of returning to Afrin.”

The camp, which is located near the village of Kashtar in the Shara district of occupied Afrin and near the border strip, includes Arab and Kurdish families, housing 100 families, including 35 Afrin families, and there are 220 children and one school. The camp’s surroundings are subjected to daily bombardment by the Turkish occupation state and its mercenaries. There are no medical points there, and Tal Rifaat Hospital is 15 km away.

“Kurds and Arabs resist attacks and siege together.”

In the face of all this, the camp residents are still resistant, and this is what Jamal Youssef highlighted by saying: “Since our departure from Afrin until this moment, we have been standing against the attacks and siege together as Kurds and Arabs, knowing that the Autonomous Administration provides support to us, but it also faces difficulties.” There are challenges in that, for example, we do not have medicines due to the blockade.”

Jamal Youssef stressed the continuation of the resistance, saying: “We will always continue our resistance and struggle.”
