50 killed in Israeli shelling of Gaza and Jabalia

Palestinian media reported that at least 50 people were killed in Israeli shelling of the Gaza Strip since dawn on Monday.

Civil Defense spokesman in the Gaza Strip, Mahmoud Basal, reported that "at least 33 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Fahmi al-Jarjawi School in the al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City."

Basal told Agence France-Presse, "The death toll from the Fahmi al-Jarjawi School massacre in the al-Daraj neighborhood of Gaza City has risen to at least 33, with dozens more wounded, most of them children, including a number of women."

Basal explained that "a number of missing persons are still under the rubble, and our crews are trying to reach them," stressing that "the Civil Defense does not have the tools or equipment to search and remove the rubble."

Basal added, "The charred bodies of children and women have been recovered," noting that the bombing directly targeted rooms filled with displaced people.

For its part, the Israeli army said that the strike on the school targeted "senior terrorists operating in a Hamas and Islamic Jihad command center located in an area that was formerly a school... in the vicinity of Gaza City."
