Members of Damascus authorities assault judge in Aleppo

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the judge, who was conducting an investigation into a crime scene within his judicial jurisdiction, was severely beaten by security members affiliated with Damascus authorities.

The Observatory reported that the assault was not limited to physical abuse; the judge was also detained for 24 hours before being released in poor health due to the violence he suffered.

The incident sparked outrage among legal and judicial circles, as it constitutes a blatant violation of judicial independence and a direct attack on judges performing their official duties.

In response, judges and staff at the Aleppo Justice Palace announced a work stoppage in protest of the assault on their colleague, demanding accountability and legal action against the perpetrators, as well as guarantees to prevent such violations that undermine the dignity of the judiciary.

Additionally, several judges and legal professionals called on the Bar Association and the Ministry of Justice to intervene urgently to protect judicial personnel from any assault or abuse, warning that leniency in handling the incident would erode trust in judicial institutions and open the door to further chaos and violations.
