On Kurdish Language Day...Calls to take action against Turkish crimes

The congratulations of the Teachers Union of Afrin al-Shahba canton, came through a statement made today, on the occasion of the Kurdish Language Day, in the presence of dozens of members of the Teachers Union of Afrin and al-Shahba cantons, in the yard of the Martyr Akid Gilo School, in al-Ahdath district in al-Shahba canton.

The statement, which was read by the union member, Rojbin Juma, referred to what the Kurdish people have been subjected to throughout history from the policy of denial, cultural genocide, oppression, and the prevention of the circulation of the Kurdish language in all areas of life, politics, social, economic, cultural, and legal, and to the historical role of Hawar magazine in exposing these policies and developing Kurdish language.

Hawar magazine, whose first issue was published on May 15, 1932, published 57 issues between 1932-1943, in Latin and Arabic letters, and accordingly this day was recognized as a day for the Kurdish language.

The union's statement stated: "With the beginning of the July 19 revolution, the Kurdish people organized themselves in all social fields, and established institutions, councils, and communes, and the Kurdish language revolution was the main activity within these institutions in society, and as we know all the components that live in the region are subject to educational courses within the curricula." (primary, preparatory, secondary, institute and postgraduate studies) in the mother tongue, which is Kurdish, Arabic, Armenian and Assyrian.

The statement indicated that "the gains of the people of Rojava and North and East Syria in terms of education showed their strength, identity, and the extent of their keenness to protect their language. The Turkish state expressed its fears of this progress, and began its attacks on the people of the region and they were forcibly displaced from the Afrin region, and thousands of students were deprived of education, and after the occupation of Afrin, the Turkish occupation committed many crimes against civilians and the region.

The statement pointed to the crimes of the Turkish occupation state with regard to education, "among the crimes is the conversion of schools into military headquarters, detention and torture centers, and some of them into radical religious centers."

The statement appealed to "the international community, the world, human rights organizations, the United Nations, and the Children's Rights Organization (UNICEF) to take its moral stance to protect children, especially displaced children, and stand against the Turkish state so that displaced students and children can return to their lands and receive education in their mother tongue and make the Kudish language among the official languages of the world.
