Greek Army Commander: Ankara's moves endanger peace and stability

The Chief of the General Staff of the Greek National Defense Konstantinos Florus, at the opening of the fifteenth session of joint security and defense policy, said that Ankara's attempt to stab and seize the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the continental shelf by signing an illegal agreement with the Libyan Government of National Accord to demarcate the alleged common borders is An example of Turkey's revisionist policy in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Greek National Defense noted to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini that this agreement contradicts international law, violates sovereign rights, and endangers peace and stability in the region.

"Everyone should understand that sovereign rights over maritime areas can only be legally exercised through international agreements negotiated between responsible governments, with full respect for the United Nations' law of the sea," said Florus.

Europe cannot accept anything else, such as coercion, threats, intimidation, provocations and military maneuvers, Konstantinos Florus, adding: “Ankara’s provocative actions, including repeated and unauthorized navigation warnings, to conduct illegal seismic surveys by the research vessel Oruç Reis in areas within the Greek continental cliff, which constitutes a major escalation and a direct threat to peace and stability in the region."

Florus noted that the research ship is accompanied by warships belonging to the Turkish Navy, which indicates Ankara's desire to militarize the issue against all efforts made by NATO to disengage the military and reduce the risks and accidents, noting that the Greek armed forces are a basic pillar for stability in the eastern Mediterranean with preserving the sovereign rights and interests of the European Union.
