Iraqi FM: withdrawal decision of US embassy was already taken by Washington, but frozen

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein revealed that Washington’s decision to withdraw its embassy from Baghdad was already "taken" and that his country was conducting consultations to persuade the US government to reverse this decision.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said that the decision to withdraw the US embassy from Baghdad was already taken by Washington, but was frozen.

Hussein added, in an interview with BBC Arabic, that his country's government was conducting wide consultations to persuade the US government to reverse this decision.

Hussein clarified that his country's government seeks to secure alternative support at various levels from European countries, in security, military and economic terms, and he believes that some of these countries have a different policy from Washington and have promised support at multiple levels.

The Iraqi Foreign Minister did not deny that Iran had played a mediating role in reaching the truce declared by Iraqi factions to stop targeting Western interests in the Green Zone or the airport, and he confirmed that his visit to Tehran had resulted in positive results, and that the dialogue also included some of these factions in Baghdad indirectly.
