Geneva hosts the two parties to the conflict in Libya at same table

The Libyan Joint Military Commission (JMC) talks were in a 5+5 format with five representatives of the UN-recognized Government of National Unity (GNA), and five from the forces loyal to warlord Khalifa Haftar.

The two parties also agreed to "stop the media escalation campaigns and hate speech and replace it with the speech of tolerance and reconciliation, reject violence and terrorism, and expedite the opening of air and land transportation lines to ensure freedom of movement for citizens between all Libyan cities."

However, military sources from the Libyan army revealed to Al-Arabiya Network that the Geneva meeting will also discuss the stabilization of the ceasefire between the two parties, the development of a joint plan to dissolve armed groups in various parts of the country and the understanding on the areas of Sirte and Al-Jufrah and keeping it a demilitarized zone and a safe space.

There is complex file, which has not been resolved in previous meetings, and it concerns the expulsion of mercenaries and foreign forces in Libya, which is one of the army's most important conditions before reaching a comprehensive security consensus.

These talks come in the wake of mutual accusations between the two parties of planning to launch an attack on the Sirte Al-Jufrah regions, and military threats, amid fears of the collapse of the fragile ceasefire agreement between them, which threatens the current political path led by the United Nations to reach a comprehensive solution to the Libyan crisis.

In this context, the spokesman for the Libyan army, Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari, accusing GNA of planning to carry out an act he described as "aggressive and provocative", preceding their attack on the Sirte Al-Jufra line and the positions of the army forces, and confirmed that there was "monitoring of militia mobilization near the specified separation line."

The other side escalated its provocative rhetoric against the army, as Colonel Muhammad Qununu, spokesman for the Government of National Accord forces, said during his visit to the Air Defense College in Misurata, “we are fully ready to confront any attack, and we will liberate all our lands."
