​​​​​​​Security Council discusses the Libyan situation today

The United Nations Security Council holds two sessions, one closed and the other open, on the situation in Libya, including a briefing by the UN envoy, Stefanie Williams.

This briefing comes at a time when the United Nations Support Mission in Libya confirmed that Libya is witnessing a remarkable transformation in events that confirms the urgent need to return to a comprehensive and integrated political process that would meet the aspirations of the Libyan people for a government that adequately represents them.

The UN mission also called for calm, the application of the rule of law, and the preservation of the rights of all citizens to peacefully express their views.

The UN mission in Libya had previously criticized the use of excessive force against the demonstrators and the arbitrary detention of civilians who went out over the past days in Tripoli and western cities to denounce corruption and the deterioration of living conditions.

The mission expressed concern about "the increase in reports of violations throughout Libya," and stressed the need for a return to a comprehensive political process in Libya.
