Europe responds to Turkey: We are determined to protect our external borders

The European Union Foreign Minister José Borrell confirmed during a visit to the Greek-Turkish border on Wednesday that the bloc "is determined to protect its external borders," after Turkey announced again that its land borders towards Europe are "open," which threatens a new wave of migrants.

José Borrell said that the European Union "is determined to protect the external borders of the Union and strongly supports the sovereignty of Greece," adding: "We share your concern and discussed how to prevent the dynamic of escalation" according to the official Greek News Agency of "Anna."

For his part, the Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, after accompanying Borrell to the border, said: "Today, after a short pause due to the pandemic (Covid-19), Turkey announced again to leave its land borders towards Europe open."

He added, "At the same time, its coast guard forces are escorting the crowded boats towards the Greek islands."

Dendias accused Turkey of "insisting on undermining the security, stability and peace of the Eastern Mediterranean," noting that Turkey "has caused problems for all its neighbors."

Borrell is scheduled to meet later with the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Minister of Defense Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos in Athens.
