The Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday that law is applied in the country, and the judiciary is independent, calling on Washington to "respect the principle of judicial independence and to refrain from any actions, positions or statements that would affect the judiciary."

Pompeo considered Thursday night that condemnation undermines Washington's relationship with Ankara and undermines confidence in the Turkish institutions.

On his Twitter, he called for Turkey to solve this problem fairly, stressing that there is no concrete evidence supporting the employee's conviction.

The American embassy in Ankara, in turn, expressed "disappointment" with the ruling "without any reliable evidence."
