Germany ... ISIS trial for genocide against Yezidis begins

The man, whom the authorities said was Taha al-J, 37, was also charged with crimes against humanity, war crimes and human trafficking, and would appear before the Frankfurt Regional High Court.

According to the indictment, Taha Al-J. Since March 2013 he joined the ranks of ISIS mercenaries and until last year held various positions in the organization in the Syrian city of Raqqa and Iraq.

The German judiciary accuses him in particular of having "bought at the end of May and the beginning of June 2015, a slave", a Yezidi woman and her five-year-old daughter, and transferred them to Fallujah where they were subjected to all forms of persecution, including starvation.

The girl died of thirst, while the mother was forced to walk barefoot outside, causing serious burns to her feet.

The suspect was arrested in Greece in May 2019 and extradited to Germany in October.

A year ago, the wife of the accused, Jennifer Fenech, appeared in a Munich court for the murder of the girl, in what is considered the first trial in the world of ISIS practices against Yezidis.

In a precedent, also the first of its kind, the German judiciary began on Thursday looking into a case dealing with "violations attributed to the Syrian regime."
