35 civilians, the majority of them women, were killed yesterday in a "terrorist" attack in northern Burkina Faso targeting a military base and the town of Arbinda, in one of the bloodiest attacks in Africa.

The African Army Chief of Staff said in a statement that a large group of terrorists simultaneously attacked a military base and the civilian population of Arbinda, adding that the brutal attack had killed 35 civilians, the majority of whom were women.

The African President declared "the 48-hour national mourning" beginning Wednesday, in honor of the lives of the victims of the attack.

The African Army confirmed that seven soldiers and 80 terrorists were killed during the attack.

The army said that the morning attack was carried out by dozens of terrorists on motorcycles and lasted several hours before the Air Force-backed armed forces could push them out.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
