Washington escalates its moves in Syrian issue

This week, the Arab press reported intensive international and regional moves about Syria and the failure of Astana path.

Al-Arab: Russia adheres to the Idlib agreement despite Turkey's failures

In this context, al-Arab newspaper said, "The statements made by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday on the sidelines of the G20 summit in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires expressed Moscow's adherence to the Idlib agreement despite the ending of deadlines set for its implementation and the absence of indications of a possible new breach in this file, in the near term."

Observers of the newspaper said, "Many reasons behind the insistence of Moscow to abide by the text of the agreement despite the reservations of the Syrian regime and its ally Iran, the most important is that there is a US-European veto on any major military operation against the province in northwestern of Syria, as well as Moscow wants to maintain cooperation with Ankara in Syria to prevent the transfer of the latter to the other box, the US camp."

"Russia is looking at the Israeli strikes targeting sites in Syria suspected of being military bases of Iran and its militias as an additional pressure factor to prevent Tehran from concentrating a permanent military system in this country. Despite the restoration of the Syrian regime its control over more than half the country's territory thanks to its decisive intervention, the crisis cannot be ended without consensus with the United States which has a military presence in the northeast of the country."

"On the US moves on Syria, the US envoy to Syria, James Jeffrey, called on Russia to make efforts to hold the Syrian Constitutional Committee on December 14, and stressed the importance of supporting countries in the process of putting pressure on Damascus government, and called for ending the two processes of Astana and Sochi for the Syrian settlement if all parties would not respond to the formation of the commission."

Al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper reported that Bloomberg agency stated on Wednesday that the US Intelligence concluded that the chlorine attack, which the Syrian regime claimed was carried out by the opposition in Aleppo, was a fake attack by al-Assad regime.

Al-Sharq al-Awsat: Washington looms a strategic patience' in Syria ... Moscow buys time to change reality

In a related context, al-Sharq al-Awsat said, "Washington is looming to pursue alternative options, including five diplomatic and military measures backed by strategic patience if Moscow does not meet its obligations to form the Syrian Constitutional Commission before the end of this year. In turn, Moscow adheres to the option of buying time and imposing facts on the ground during the American patience.

Washington and its Western allies are talking about "strategic patience" and hinting five measures to put pressure on Moscow, Damascus and Tehran. First, it includes military presence in eastern Syria, strengthening the presence by deploying diplomats, training local forces and financing stability in addition to conducting a no-fly zone similar to what has done in northern Iraq at the end of the 1990s.
