Authorities in Laos said Tuesday Hundreds of people are missing in the wake of the collapse of an electricity-generating dam under construction in the south of the country,

The dam, located in the southwestern Atabee province near the border with Vietnam, collapsed on Monday evening, causing five billion cubic meters of water to flow strongly, causing many deaths and hundreds of missing, and destroyed many homes.

France press noted that the authorities appealed for emergency assistance to the victims.

Dozens of dams are under construction in Laos, which exports most of its hydropower to neighboring countries, particularly Thailand.

For several years, environmental organizations have expressed concern about hydroelectric ambitions in Laos, especially on the impact of dams on Mekong River, plants, animals, people and the local economy.
