An ominous crisis as hydrocarbons are scarce in al-Shahba

The crisis of securing hydrocarbons in al-Shahba canton is exacerbated because it is besieged by all sides, and the Syrian regime prevents the passage of fuel tanks to al-Shahba, increasing the risk of water and electricity availability and the decline of the agricultural sector in the canton.

Many difficulties appear to fulfill needs of al-Shahba canton's people and Afrin people who are living in al-Shahba canton from the service requirements despite the work of the municipality to provide all services to the people.

Afrin families having flowed to the canton, the population has increased in al-Shahba canton and became the people’s needs are increasingly more and more. Water, electricity, fuel and others needs should be assured and recently emerged the problem of shortages of fuel where the Syrian regime prevents fuel tanks to enter to al-Shahba canton, and the lack of water tankers and power cuts in many districts and villages.

Al-Shahba canton depends on agriculture and the loss of fuel oil, which is the main material for farmers, will pose a major threat to the agricultural sector.

The Co-chair of the Executive Body of the Afrin Region Municipality Fayek Ahmed said: "Disruption and high price of diesel fuel hinders the work of the municipality in terms of cleanliness and distribution of water and electricity, and in the absence of fuel insurance, we cannot accomplish these works and the province will face a humanitarian disaster especially that thousands of Afrin people were forced to leave their homes and are residing now in al-Shahba canton".

It is worth mentioning that the price of diesel fuel reached 400 SP, and the price per barrel reached 77 thousand S.P. while the material is often missed despite the high prices.
