After a long halt in the return process of displaced persons, 100 Yazidi families returned yesterday, Sunday, from the Khanke and Cham Mishko camps in South Kurdistan to the areas of Dokur, Karzark, and Sikeniya in Shengal. According to the Roj News Agency, another 270 families are scheduled to return to their areas in Shengal by the end of the month.

It is worth mentioning that around 31,000 Yazidis are still living in 10 camps in the city of Duhok, in addition to another 34,000 residing outside the camps in various areas of the region.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 95% of the displaced Yazidis in the camps have registered their names for return. However, the process faces various difficulties and obstacles.

It should be noted that thousands of Yazidis were displaced from Shengal on August 3, 2014, following ISIS attacks, and sought refuge in North, South, and West Kurdistan, as well as in European countries. Despite the return of a significant number of them, the return of thousands of others remains hindered by various obstacles, particularly by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

Previously, the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement issued a decision to close all camps in order to accelerate the return of the displaced to their homes.
