YPJ: Commander Nuradin's wisdom, fighting spirit will always guide us

The General Command of the YPJ issued a statement to the public today commemorating Commander Nuradin Sofi, who was martyred on April 6, 2021, in the Medya defense areas.

The statement read:

 “We remember with deep reverence and gratitude the great commander, comrade Nuradin Sofi, who sacrificed his life for the freedom, dignity, and future of his people. His courage, devotion, and unwavering faith were a flame that lit the path not only for his comrades, but for all peoples struggling for freedom. The determination and sacrifice he displayed throughout his life left us with an honor and responsibility to carry forward.

We, his comrades, bow our heads in pride to honor his memory, and we pledge to preserve his struggle and legacy. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his noble national family, to our people, and to all our comrades in the struggle for freedom. Comrade Nuradin Sofi was a pioneering leader in our people’s fight for freedom and dignity, a unique resister, and a hero of the people who gave his life for the freedom of his people, shared human values, and a world of justice. His struggle was not merely an expression of local resistance, it was also the embodiment of humanity’s collective conscience.

Through his steadfast stance, strategic mind, and decisive leadership in the war against ISIS terrorism, forces of darkness that threaten not just one region, but all of humanity, he secured his place in the history. The struggle he led was not only a military victory; it was a defense of human dignity, women’s freedom, and the fraternity of peoples. His wisdom, willpower, humility, competence, and sharp intellect acted as a compass for his people in all circumstances. He was an exemplary commander, a trusted comrade, and a pioneer who kept hope alive not only on the battlefield, but in all aspects of life. His reassuring demeanor, strong bond with the people, and sacrifices formed the foundations upon which his struggle was built.

The resistance of comrade Nuradin carries a meaning that transcends borders. In his character, the voices of those who lived under oppression and tyranny, who fought for women’s liberation, and who resisted cultural genocide, rose high. His life reminded the world that freedom is not merely an ideal, but a right worth sacrificing one’s life for. The cause of the great commander Nuradin is not just the struggle of the many; it is the struggle of all humanity.

His ideals were of a world governed by justice and equality. For this reason, our people’s resistance must be understood across the world as part of the broader quest for freedom. He will remain immortal in the memory of his people, and his name will be passed down as a legacy for future generations; a symbol of freedom, resistance, and human dignity. We will protect his legacy and continue the struggle for justice, equality, and freedom with determination. Today, we are filled with pain, and in our eyes burns a fierce flame. As we walk today along the path of our comrade Nuradin Sofi; one of the finest, most intelligent, and most courageous leaders of freedom in the world; it is also a day to keep his ideas and struggle alive forever.

He was not just a fighter, but a friend of his people’s freedom and the strongest leader in the struggle. His name and steps are engraved in the memory of our entire land like mountains. He did not see leadership as merely a military duty, but as an art of protecting human dignity and securing his people’s future. Every step he took as a commander was not just a tactical move, but a mark of freedom recorded in history. Every operation was for the honor of the people; every battle was a new step toward to their future.

His approach to women’s liberation was one of his greatest virtues and set him apart from others. He did not see the female fighters merely as comrades-in-arms, but as pioneers of a free society. He always treated the Women’s Defense Forces with trust and empowered them. There was a spark of faith in his eyes, and he knew that without women’s liberation, humanity could never be free.

We know his dreams did not fade, for they were engraved in the hearts of his comrades and people. To us, comrade Nuradin was not just a friend; he was an ally, a teacher, and a guide. His approach to women’s liberation immortalized his image in our eyes. He treated the women fighters as equals, not only on the battlefield, but also in thought and will.

He recognized that women’s struggle against ISIS was not only a military revolution, but also an ideological one. He adopted as his own the principle: ‘This land will not be free until women are free.’ Defending his ideals is not merely a matter of remembrance, it is a promise and an oath. We will defend this oath in every sphere of life, on every battlefield, and with every opportunity we are given. Our duty now is to advance his steps and fulfill his goals.

The loss of our comrade and commander may be a joy to the enemy. But we know that in the struggle for freedom, martyrdom does not weaken the fight, it strengthens it. His martyrdom has reinforced our resolve. His departure planted in the heart of every woman, every young person, and every lover of freedom, an even greater determination to resist. Today, we do not only mourn a comrade, but one of our bravest leaders who defended the honor of the people. His name is recorded in the epic of resistance against the darkness of ISIS. ISIS was a barbaric mentality aimed at enslaving women and annihilating peoples. In the face of this darkness, comrade Nuradin Sofi was a light defending the honor of peoples. In every battle and before every operation, he not only drew tactical plans, but also strengthened the will of the people.

His leadership against ISIS was not only a military victory, but also a glorious chapter in human history. He earned a place not only in the ranks of the forces, but in the hearts of the people. He built bridges of trust and unity between peoples, fostering a shared hope for freedom among Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen, Assyrians, and Armenians alike. Every operation under his leadership was a blow against barbarism and a victory for the people.

Today, we know that he was not only a commander, but also a bearer of an ideology; an ideology of equality among peoples, women’s freedom, and a life without oppression. His martyrdom is not the end for us, but the beginning of a stronger and more determined struggle. As the Women’s Protection Units, we will continue with even greater determination the tactics, faith, and courage he taught us.

Commander Nuradin was a true hero of the people who sacrificed his life for the freedom of his people, justice, equality, and dignity. His stance, even in the darkest times, planted hope and faith in the hearts of his people, and history immortalized him. His name will remain forever, and he will continue to be a symbol of resistance against oppression and of life in the name of freedom. His resistance was not only a fight on a single front, but a journey for freedom shaped by consciousness, strengthened by willpower, and infused with faith by nature, led with intelligence and skill. His stance, which instilled hope and courage in his people even in the hardest times, will keep his name alive in the hearts of his people and in the history of the struggle for freedom.

Commander Nuradin, your memory will endure at the height of our struggle, in the conscience and hearts of these peoples. Your tactical wisdom, fighting spirit, and memories of our comradeship will remain our guiding light. We will strengthen this army of freedom that grows through the existence of leaders like you. Comrade Nuradin Sofi, who gave his life for the freedom of his people, has now become a hero for all; not only for our people, but for all peoples and humanity striving for freedom. Those who walk in your footsteps will continue the struggle until the world enjoys peace, freedom, and brotherhood.

Commander, your dreams are our path, and your goal is our oath. Barbarism will be defeated, victory will belong to the peoples, women will be free, and you will live in every page of this victory. With this oath, we say: your dreams will not be betrayed, the flag of freedom will not fall from our hands; your path is our path, your goals are our goals.
