Youth in Hasakah call for an active role in building Syria’s future

Young men and women from the city of Hasakah stressed the importance of granting youth a real role in building Syria’s future and participating in political and social life after years of war and the changes the country has witnessed following the fall of the Baath regime.

The co-president of the Syrian Democratic Youth Council, Salman Al-Nabhan, said: “Youth were the main driving force of the Syrian revolution over the past 14 years, and they are the group most affected by the consequences and repercussions of the war.”

He stressed the necessity of their presence in decision-making centers, rather than being treated as mere numbers within institutions, and called for their participation in drafting the constitution and shaping the roadmap for the country’s future.

Al-Nabhan pointed out that investing in youth potential and involving them in political and social life would contribute to strengthening coexistence and stability and reducing hate speech.

He added: “After 14 years of revolution, Syrian youth have gained important experience inside and outside Syria, which requires making use of these energies in building the next phase.”

Regarding the role of youth in Syria, he said they were the nucleus of the revolution and must continue their political and social engagement, with support for their presence in leadership and decision-making positions within institutions, rather than being limited to functional roles only.

For his part, member of the Armenian Youth Movement, Mikhael Zadik, said that youth are demanding social justice and participation in political and economic decision-making, in addition to supporting small projects that help young people become productive and develop their capabilities.

On strengthening the role of youth in society, Zadik said that providing job opportunities is essential to reduce unemployment and prevent young people from drifting toward negative or deviant paths. He stressed the need to encourage youth toward work and production.

He explained that the new phase in Syria requires greater attention to youth by improving education, supporting vocational and technical skills, and encouraging them to develop their abilities to overcome the effects of war and the difficult conditions they have experienced over recent years.

He added that youth will ultimately bear responsibility for building Syria in the future, and therefore must be given sufficient support to enable them to fulfill this role.

For her part, the Armenian youth representative in Al-Darbasiyah, Nour Vartarian, emphasized that youth are demanding equality among all components, security and stability, and a real role in political and social life.

She also stressed the need to provide an integrated educational environment in Rojava that contributes to raising the academic and cultural level of young people.

She added that many Syrian youth abroad wish to return to the country but are waiting for a safe and stable environment and real job opportunities that would allow them to start a new life.

She concluded with a message to young people: “I call on youth to hold on to their dreams and not give up despite the challenges and difficult conditions the country has experienced during the years of war. They should not think it is too late to achieve their goals, as the opportunity is still there as long as they keep trying.”
