Women call for rights in Syria's new constitution

Women across Rojava continue to call for guarantees of women's rights in the drafting of a new Syrian constitution, an end to patriarchal thinking in society, and women's full participation in all aspects of life.

These views come amid growing political discussions over Syria's future and the country's constitutional process, with women demanding a model that reflects genuine partnership and free will.

In this context, Muntaha Mohammad Matar said that exclusionary patriarchal thinking still persists in society despite women's vital role. She stated: "We, Arab women, demand that women's rights be clearly enshrined in society, the constitution, and all areas of life."

She added that the Rojava Revolution became known as the Women's Revolution and achieved significant accomplishments at all levels, arguing that this experience should serve as the foundation for a new Syria.

For her part, Bahira Ibrahim said previous policies had marginalised women and excluded them from various aspects of life. She emphasised that the Rojava Revolution helped strengthen democratic values and enhance women's role.

She added that women, led by the Women's Protection Units (YPJ), achieved major victories that positively affected women's status and role in society.

Bahira stressed that Syria's new constitution must guarantee and protect women's rights, asserting that any attempt to marginalise women or undermine their rights is unacceptable, particularly given the sacrifices women have made to secure their rights and contribute to building their society.

Fatima al-Hassan also noted that over the past 14 years in Rojava, women have made great sacrifices and demonstrated to the world and the international community their ability to bring about change and actively contribute to building society.

She pointed out that some actors are attempting to exclude women from political life, stressing that such a mentality is completely unacceptable.

"We, as women, affirm that we will never give up our rights. We will continue to uphold democratic and free thought, promote a culture of mutual respect, and strengthen the values of equality in society," she concluded.
